God's Attributes

Attributes of God

Though initially I was planning on writing the content for the subject matter below, I came to my senses, as it were, and determined it would be best to direct your attention to other's writings. Their works far surpass anything I could produce or articulate. And all, as pronounced by them, is to the Glory of God. So the links below will connect to multiple men and their study on a particular subject.

God has provided a self revelation in His Word so that we may know Him within the limitations of our finite minds. The attributes of God can be categorized multiple ways, but are generally broken into two main groups: those that belong to God alone (divine or incommunicable) and those that are in some way found in man (personal or communicable). These we have received when created in God's image, but are now marred by sin.

We can define God's sovereignty as: God is the supreme ruler - in control of all events. All things are under His rule and control, and nothing happens without His direction or permission. He works all things (not just some things) after the counsel of His own will Ephesians 1:11 - ..also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will. God's purpose is all inclusive and is never thwarted: Isaiah 46:11 - Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it.
Romans 9:9-16 - For this is the word of promise: "At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son." 10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, "The older will serve the younger." 13 Just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." 14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15 For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

  1. God's plan encompasses all things - He is sovereign over all things.
  2. God's plan was formed in eternity past (Eph 1:4, 2 Tim 1:9, 1 Pet 1:20).
  3. God's plan is wise, perfect, and beyond our full comprehension (Rom 11:33-36, Psa 104:24, Prov 3:19).
  4. God's plan is according to His will (Dan 4:35, Eph 1:11).
  5. God's plan encompasses His directive will (Isa 45:18, Dan 4:35, Dan 2:21, Eph 1:4) and His permissive will through which He brings things about through secondary means (such as the free will sinful acts of men).
  6. The purpose of God's plan is His glory (Psa 19:1; Eph 1:4-6, 11-12; Rom 9:23; Rev 4:11).
  7. God's plan encompasses all things, yet man is responsible for his sin (Rom 3:23).
  8. God, in some cases, uses man to carry out the plan (e.g. election and evangelism) (Acts 10:1-5).

Omniscience: To know all things, past, present, and future. Closely related is Foreknowledge: knowing reality before it is real and events before they happen.

There are two things concerning the foreknowledge of God about which many are in ignorance: the meaning of the term, and its Scriptural scope. Because this ignorance is so widespread, it is easy for preachers and teachers to palm off perversions of this subject, even upon the people of God. There is only one safeguard against error, that is to be established in the faith. For that there has to be prayerful, diligent study, and a receiving with meekness the engrafted Word of God. Only then are we fortified against the attacks of those who assail us. There are those who misuse this very truth to discredit and deny the absolute sovereignty of God in the salvation of sinners. Just as higher critics repudiate the divine inspiration of the Scriptures, and evolutionists, the work of God in creation, so some pseudo Bible teachers pervert His foreknowledge to set aside His unconditional election unto eternal life.

When the blessed subject of divine foreordination is expounded, when God's eternal choice of certain ones to be conformed to the image of His Son is set forth, the enemy sends along someone to argue that election is based upon the foreknowledge of God. This foreknowledge is interpreted to mean that God foresaw certain ones who would be more pliable than others and they would respond more readily to the strivings of the Spirit. So, because God knew they would believe, He predestinated them unto salvation. But such logic is radically wrong. It repudiates the truth of total depravity, for it argues that there is something good in some men. It takes away the independency of God, for it makes His decrees rest upon what He discovers in the creature.

It completely turns things upside down, for in saying God foresaw certain sinners who would believe in Christ, and because of this He predestinated them unto salvation, is the very reverse of the truth. Scripture affirms that God, in His sovereignty, singled out certain ones to be recipients of His distinguishing favors (Acts 13:48); therefore He determined to bestow upon them the gift of faith. False theology makes God's foreknowledge of our believing the cause of His election to salvation. However, God's election is the cause, and our believing in Christ the effect.

This Is One of the divine perfections which is not sufficiently pondered. It is one of the excellencies of the Creator which distinguishes Him from all His creatures. God is perpetually the same: subject to no change in His being, attributes, or determinations. Therefore God is compared to a rock (Deut. 32:4) which remains immovable, when the entire ocean surrounding it is continually in a fluctuating state. Even so, though all creatures are subject to change, God is immutable. Because God has no beginning and no ending, He can know no change. He is everlastingly "the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning" (James 1:17). A. W. Pink The Attributes of God.
