Mathétés, (math-ay-tes') - a learner, a pupil, a disciple. A person who believes in the ideas and principles of someone famous and tries to live the way that person does or did. - The Cambridge Dictionary
In Christianity a true disciple of Christ is a follower or learner who follows Jesus, not by his own effort, for that is religiousity, but in the power of the Holy Spirit and the provision of the Gospel. John 3:16; John 15:5; Matthew 11:28
Discipleship then is the process by which a disciple becomes more like his master.
There were 'disciples' of Christ who followed Him for awhile but eventually walked away. See John 6:59-66. So a Christian is a disciple but a disciple is not necessarily a Christian.
A true disciple becomes like his master in the following ways:
The life of a disciple in this world has been called by many different names; a walk, a pilgrimage, a journey. We are to grow up in Christ from being a spiritual babe to maturity. 1 Peter 2:2; Colossians 1:28; Ephesians 4:17-32
And we are to pass on to others what we have received, first off is the gift of salvation that God offers, Matthew 28:19-20, and then the things of God that we are learning. Are we reading our bible?, are we attending a bible believing church?, are we praying?, are we fellowshipping with fellow believer's?
If you have come to a true saving faith in Christ you have been delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of God's son. Are you living like it? If not, why not? 2 Corinthians 13:5
1 Timothy 4:16. God desires that you live a life of blessing and know His will.
